Luigi Mangione began plotting to ‘wack’ Brian Thompson as early as August, investigators say

Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione appears to have been plotting his attack against Brian Thompson as far back as August, penning a desire to take out the CEO of a medical insurer in a notebook, laden with angry tirades against the industry, that investigators say belongs to him.

In an entry in the notebook dated Aug. 15, Mangione allegedly wrote “the details are finally coming together,” noting he “was glad” that he procrastinated in his preparations because it “allowed him to learn more” about UnitedHealthcare, the insurance behemoth Thompson led.

“The target is insurance,” he allegedly wrote, adding that UnitedHealthcare “checks every box.”

An Oct. 22 entry shared by federal investigators in a complaint unsealed Thursday alludes to an investor conference coming up in six weeks, at which he described his intention to “wack” [sic] the CEO of one of the insurance companies in attendance.

In the same entry, Mangione allegedly called the Manhattan investor conference “a true windfall” and wrote “most importantly” what he ominously refers to as “the message” would become “self evident,” seemingly an oblique reference to his anti-insurer views and the aftermath the shooting would incite.

Investigators also recovered a letter from Mangione, which was addressed “to the Feds,” in which he called hatching his alleged murderous scheme “trivial” and explicitly stated that he was working alone.

“I wasn’t working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: Some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience,” he allegedly wrote.

The investigator noted that he believes “CAD” is a reference to computer-aided design, a method of creating 2D or 3D models of physical objects like buildings commonly used in fields like architecture and product design.

“P.S. you can check serial numbers to verify this is all self-funded,” the missive adds. “My own ATM withdrawals.”
